2010 DeRose-Hinkhouse entries deadline extended to January 28
RCC members now have until January 28 to enter the 2010 DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards competition. The deadline has been extended because of recent bad weather in the U.S. and member involvement with the Haitian earthquake response
Winners will receive the 2010 awards – which recognize work done during 2009 – in Chicago April 8 during a special reception at Religion Communication Congress 2010 in the Chicago Marriott Downtown Miracle Mile.
The DeRose-Hinkhouse competition is open only to active RCC members. They may enter work in 10 judging categories. Journalism faculty members at Eastern Illinois University are to evaluate entries.
The annual recognition program started in 1967 as the Paul M. Hinkhouse Annual Graphic Arts Award and later expanded to other areas of faith group communication. Hinkhouse was a charter member of the Religious Publicity Council in 1929. He was publicity secretary for the Presbyterian board of Foreign Missions at the time. In 1933 he founded a lithography firm in New York with Victor DeRose.
After Hinkhouse died in 1963, DeRose funded an award for members of the Religious Public Relations Council to honor his partner. After DeRose died in 1976, his widow continued the financial support. DeRose’s name was added to the award.
Paul Black of Springfield, Ill., is coordinating the 2010 DeRose-Hinkhouse program.
