Editor tells New York Chapter how to reach publics online

The Rev. Paul Raushenbush, religion editor for The Huffington Post and associate dean of religious life at Princeton University, spoke about blogging and online communications at the Religion Communicators Council New York Chapter meeting on 20 April 2010. Religions for Peace hosted the event.

The Huffington Post religion editor told members of RCC’s New York Chapter April 20 about how to share their news more effectively online.

The Rev. Paul Raushenbush offered insights into working with online publications like his and bloggers.

Too often, Raushenbush said, news organizations have dismissed releases from faith groups. But by using new media to tell compelling stories, religious groups can reach larger audiences and even break into the mainstream.

"Raushenbush proved with The Huffington Post that the online world is interested in stories of faith," said RCC member Melissa Dixon of the National Council of Churches. "If a religion section that began only last year has demonstrated that high growth, the potential for religion communication is endless."

Besides working with the Internet newspaper, Raushenbush, a clergyman in the American Baptist Church, is associate dean of religious life at Princeton University and co-director of the Program on Religion, Diplomacy and International Relations at The Liechtenstein Institute on Self Determination. His duties at Princeton include strengthening the interfaith community on campus.
