"Copyright Considerations" at the United Methodist Board of Higher Education & Ministry - December 12, 2007
What a treat it was to hear about copyright considerations from a
knowledgeable copyright lawyer -- especially one who has her own experience in journalism, songwriting, and book authoring. Our speaker was Amy J. Everhart (right) of Riley Warnock & Jacobson in Nashville.
Amy built her talk on the basics of copyright considerations, and on the many questions earlier submitted by our members. We heard about fair use, parity, copying tapes onto DVDs, including original art in magazine photos, copyrighting books, gathering info from the Internet, and so much more.
Present at the meeting were: Tom Albin, Al Dittes, Amy Everhart (speaker), Laura Flippen Tenzel, Mike Hickcox, Mary Lynn Holly, Polly House, Joyce Jackson, Harry Leake, Nancy Lown, Kathy Nobel, Judy Saks, Ken Sloane, Cindy Solomon, Ferdrickque Strong, Jeremy Trott, Amelia Tucker-Shaw.
"Visit to the Islamic Center of Nashville" - November 14, 2007

With great hospitality, the Islamic Center of Nashville hosted our meeting -- providing a place to meet, a wonderful lunch, a hostess named Salma Gill, and our speaker, Dr. Amir Arain (below).
The meeting place was an alcove adjoining the hall in which prayers are said several times each day. The lunch was a selection of meat and rice from a
Turkish restaurant. Salma not only made the arrangements, but also stayed with us for the meeting and discussed issues from a Muslim woman's perspective. And Dr. Arain, a neurologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, talked about his faith and patiently answered our questions. Much of the conversation focused on religious beliefs and where they are confused with, or mingled with, varying cultural beliefs.
At 12:30 we paused while Dr. Arain joined several other men in prayer at the other end of the hall. After a few minutes he returned and we finished our conversation.
The 16 members and friends of RCC in attendance were: Albert Dittes, Laura Flippen Tenzel, Mike Hickcox, Joyce Jackson, Harry Leake, Nancy Lown, Tom MacInally, Carol Mansour, Janice Neely, Kathy Noble, Jeanette Pinkston, Chelsea Sanchez, Katie Schull, Jan Snider, Jeremy Trott, and Fran Walsh.

Our guest speaker was Scott McConnell (right), associate director of LifeWay Research. Since joining LifeWay in 1996, McConnell has researched church practices, needs, and preferences to support product development and communications decisions. He talked about the procedures of the research LifeWay does to provide an objective view of prevailing opinions and practices related to faith in America.
Attending were two guests: Albert Dittes, a book author and clergy person in the Adventist Church; and Chris Johnson, of LifeWay.
Members and regulars attending were: Laura Flippen, Kathy Gilbert, Mike Hickcox, Polly House, Sam House, Deborah Jarrett, Harry Leake, Judy Saks, Katie Schull, Jeremy Trott, and Amelia Tucker-Shaw.

"A Christian / Jewish Visit to Israel" at Gordon Jewish Community Center - January 17, 2007
What a fascinating session this was at the Gordon Jewish Community Center in West Nashville. Our own member, Judy Saks, showed pictures and talked about her recent trip to Jerusalem and around Israel with five Nashville-area rabbis, five Nashville-area evangelical pastors, a representative of the evangelical community, and a Roman Catholic priest. For the dozen members and guests at the meeting, Judy provided an excellent luncheon presentation.
Judy, coordinator for the Jewish Federation of Nashville, had been to Jerusalem previously, but not with a group like this -- intent on examining support for Israel among the Jewish and evangelical communities. They all learned -- that while the support was universal -- the reasons were very different, and the expectations and visions for Israel are not at all the same.
For all involved, it was an exciting trip, full of new perspectives. Those who traveled together will gather again in Nashville for a follow-up discussion.
