Webinar: An Introduction to Religious Literacy

On Tuesday, April 12 at 1:00 p.m EDT, Diane L. Moore of Harvard Divinity School talked with RCC members about "An Introduction to Religious Literacy."

Religious literacy is a program focus of the Religion Communicators Council (RCC). Religion is part of everything, RCC helps you talk about it. Diane’s presentation featured insights into what religious literacy is and showcased some successful models and best practices in the field.

About Diane L. Moore

Diane MooreDiane L. Moore focuses her research on enhancing the public understanding of religion through education from the lens of critical theory.

Her current project is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) through HarvardX entitled Religious Literacy: Traditions and Scriptures which is the first in a series entitled World Religions Through Their Scriptures. She is also the Principle Investigator for a three-year initiative entitled Religious Literacy and the Professions that is a collaboration between Harvard Divinity School and Boston University.

She is the director of the Religious Literacy Project, coordinator for the Religious Studies and Education Certificate, and serves on the Task Force for Training, Tools, and Methods at the US State Department through its Office of Religion and Global Affairs.

Regarding her work in education and with educators, Moore chaired the American Academy of Religion's Task Force on Religion in the Schools, which conducted a three-year initiative to establish guidelines for teaching about religion in K-12 public schools (PDF). Her book Overcoming Religious Illiteracy: A Cultural Studies Approach to the Study of Religion in Secondary Education was published by Palgrave in 2007 and she serves on the editorial boards of the journals Religion and Education and the British Journal of Religious Education.
